My Review

Another amazing read by Colleen Hoover! I am not sure which version my Kobo edition of the book was but the ending I read via ebook is VERY different from the ending I read in the physical book. I liked the ending of the physical book far better. The ebook version ending was really weird.

Anyhow, I loved the story between Sloan and Luke, and I felt so bad for Asa, despite how terrible of a person he was, and I feel sad there wasn’t a redemption arc for him. There was an opportunity for one in the second half of the book, before everything came to a head, but it never happened and for that I feel really sad.

He had such a horrible upbringing in an abusive household, it made my heart hurt for him. He had a friend in school whose mother gave his friend little ‘I love you’ notes in his lunch box. Asa used to steal them from his friend, tear the part off that had his friend’s name on it and pretend those were notes from his own mother. It broke my heart. His dad, an abusive schizophrenic, would have episodes, and one day during one of these episodes, made Asa hide under the house for an entire day. It was just so incredibly sad and despite how terrible of a person Asa became due to his upbringing, a big part of me so wanted to see him just be loved and learn how to be better than what his parents caused him to be, and I guess that was really just the tragedy of this story.  I just wish when he was realizing all the faults within his father and how he was wrong about so many things that it would have been an opportunity to grow as a character. 😔 So I think for that, I still can’t give this 5 stars. The ending was good, and it gave closure, but I just think this would have been a far better story if Asa could have grown as a character in the end, but I also understand that’s part of what made this story so emotionally gripping, and that we don’t always get the ending we want, and that’s true even in reality.

Still, this was an amazing story and I could definitely see myself re-reading it down the road. Highly recommend!
